On April 12, Hungary heads to the polls in what is set to be a historic, high-stakes election. For the first time since Viktor Orbán’s Fidesz party secured a constitutional supermajority in 2010, Fidesz’s grip on power is facing a serious challenge.
That challenge comes from Péter Magyar, who rose to prominence in the wake of a major scandal in early 2024 that shook the foundations of Fidesz’s rule. Almost two years on, Magyar’s Tisza Party is consistently leading in the polls.
